MACH 139 Milling Machine Operation

5 credits
Students will learn how to safely operate a 3-axis milling machine. They will maintain acceptable tolerances of completed parts, manage coolant, keep a clean and organized workspace, read and write tie-in and setup sheets, use SPC, troubleshoot error codes, and use various basic machine functions.

Prerequisites: ABED 046  (or placement into ENGL 093  or higher) and MATH 087  (or placement into MATH 098  or higher)

Corequisites: MACH 137  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Maintain a safe working environment
  • Troubleshoot milling error messages
  • Monitor coolant levels
  • Demonstrate control through dry-runs of proven programs
  • Set tool length offsets
  • Edit cutter compensation
  • Change out parts using various milling fixtures
  • Utilize various G-Code commands in MDI mode to achieve various CNC functions/actions
  • Inspect finished parts for size and quality
  • Set and check fixture offsets
  • Apply safe use of hand-jog mode on CNC machine
