MEDA 129 Pharmacology

4 credits


Basic concepts of pharmacology, legal issues, dosage calculation, prescription interpretation, and overview of the most frequently prescribed medications will be taught. Students will practice documenting medications in patient charts.

MEDA 129 is a hybrid course with face-to-face class sessions and self-directed, online content. 

Prerequisites: MEDA 121 BIOL& 175 , and MATH 087  (or placement into MATH 098  or higher)

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Identify drug classification, indication, side effects, and adverse reactions of 100 commonly prescribed drugs used in outpatient care and/or family practice medicine
  • Identify applicable state and federal regulations regarding medications
  • Maintain and document medication information in a patient’s medical record
  • Write a prescription as ordered by physician
  • Call a prescription into a pharmacy with correct information based on physician’s order
  • Correlate common disorders of the systems of the body with common medications utilized in the management of the disorder
  • Complete a prior authorization of a medication
  • Use proper terminology, spelling, and pronunciation when communicating medication information
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills when interpreting medication orders
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and cultural awareness when interpreting medication information for a patient

  • be prepared to obtain an entry-level position in their field
  • be prepared to work in ambulatory settings performing administrative and clinical duties.
  • meet CAAHEP Standards in the areas of cognitive and psychomotor skills
  • be prepared to pass the CMA (AAMA) exam
