ABED 046 Writing5 credits An intermediate adult basic education reading and writing skills class in which students gain familiarity with the basic sentence types, generate grammatically-correct sentences that relate to the same topic, and begin writing paragraphs that are unified under a topic and a thesis sentence. Through the course’s reading component, students learn to analyze written passages, summarize main ideas, draw inferences and make judgments, and identify the elements in a textbook. This course is intended to prepare students for entry into AHSE 050 or ENGL 093 depending on each student’s academic goals.
Prerequisites: CASAS ABED Reading Assessment score at the ABED Intermediate Level (217-238) plus a writing sample assessed at the intermediate level or instructor permission
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Write a variety of sentences, including statement, questions and commands
- Expand simple sentences to reflect more complex ideas
- Use correct subject-verb agreement, capitalization, and punctuation
- Develop proofreading and editing skills
- Compose a letter
- Write a simple paragraph
- Experience writing as a form of personal expression
- Demonstrate knowledge of the use of a dictionary
