Associate in Business, Direct Transfer Agreement/Major Related Program (DTA/MRP)

Program Admission Dates: Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer

The Associate in Business DTA/MRP degree is a pathway for students planning to prepare for various business majors at universities in Washington. This agreement is with the Washington Baccalaureate Institutions (BIs) offering a bachelor’s degree in business administration including accounting, management, and management information systems. BIs that are party to this agreement are Central Washington University, Eastern Washington University, The Evergreen State College, University of Washington (all campuses), Washington State University (all campuses), Western Washington University, Gonzaga University, Heritage University, Pacific Lutheran University, Saint Martin’s University, Seattle Pacific University, Seattle University, Walla Walla University, and Whitworth University.

Business DTA/MRP students should contact their potential transfer institution(s) early in their program regarding:

  • The specific course choices in each area of the Statewide agreement where options are listed (humanities, social science)
  • Admission requirements for both the insitution(s) and the major, including overall minimum GPA, a higher GPA in a selected subset of courses, or a specific minimum grade in one or more courses such as math or English; meeting the minimum requirements of the degree does not guarantee admission to the transfer insitution(s)

Business DTA/MRP graduates will:

  • describe and discuss the measurement of economic performance, national income accounting, aggregate supply and demand, fiscal policy, money creation/ Federal Reserve system, monetary policy, inflation, and unemployment
  • analyze resource and income distribution, assess consumer and business behavior, and evaluate price determination and production cost
  • recognize the social and behavioral nature of law and the structure and function of the American legal system and to assess and articulate basic legal principles and processes
  • analyze and evaluate accounting information as part of the control, planning, and decision-making processes
  • describe and discuss functions and their graphs, linear programming, matrices, combinatorics, logic, statistics, and the applications of math to finance and economics
  • recognize applications of differential and integral calculus to business problems
  • demonstrate communication, intercultural appreciation, teamwork, information literacy, and critical thinking
  • meet Social Science, Humanities, Written Communication, and Quantitative Reasoning distribution area outcomes

Lake Washington Institute of Technology does not offer every course each quarter. It is the student’s responsibility to consult the Class Schedule and work out an individual schedule with an advisor. Any developmental coursework a student may be required to complete may increase the program length.

The courses listed below are a suggested sequence; as long as prerequisites are met, courses may be taken in a different order.

Diversity and Social Justice Requirement


Within the degree requirements, students must complete a 3-5 credit course that meets the college’s Diversity and Social Justice (DSJ) requirement. DSJ courses are designated in the college schedule and are designed to meet other general education or technical requirements simultaneous to meeting the DSJ requirement (e.g., ENGL& 101D meets both the ENGL& 101 requirement and the DSJ requirement).

The requirements of the Business DTA/MRP are met by the degree plan as listed above. The following information lists the requirements by subject area and includes advising notes and institution-specific requirements. Students should review this information carefully in order to plan their degree pathway in alignment with their transfer institution(s).

Communication Skills: 10 credits in English Composition
  • Easter Washington University requirement: The second English composition course must be equivalent to Eastern’s English 201 College Composition: Analysis, Research, and Documentation.
Quantitative/Symbolic Reasoning (QSR) Skills: 10 credits in QSR
  • 5 credits of business calculus (MATH& 148), calculus I (MATH& 151), or a higher level math that includes calculus as a prerequisite
  • Other 5 credits may include finite math or pre-calculus prerequisites for calculus or other courses to prepare for business calculus.
Humanities: 15 credits in Humanities
  • Selected from at least two disciplines
  • No more than 10 credits allowed from any one discipline
  • No more than 5 credits in world language or ASL at the 100 level
  • No more than 5 credits in performance/skills courses
  • Advising notes:
    • Students intending the international business major should consult their potential transfer institution(s) regarding level of world language required for admission to the major. 5 credits in world languages may apply to the Humanities requirement.
    • Students are encouraged to include a speech or oral communication course (not small group communication).
Social Sciences: 15 credits in Social Sciences
  • 5 credits Microeconomics (ECON& 201)
  • 5 credits Macroeconomics (ECON& 202)
  • 5 credits additional social science
  • Advising note: Students should contact their potential transfer institution(s) for advice on which additional social science course to take.
Natural Sciences: 15 credits in Natural Sciences
  • 5 credits in statistics (business statistics preferred)
  • 10 credits in physical, biological, and/or earth science, including at least one lab course
  • Western Washington University advising note: Students intending the manufacturing management major at Western should consult Western regarding selection of natural science courses required for admission to the major.
  • University of Washington Seattle: For students intending to attend UW Seattle, the statistics course must have a minimum prerequisite of calculus or be equivalent to UW’s Quantitative Methods (QMETH) 201 or Statistics (STAT) 311.
Business: 20 credits in Business
  • 5 credits Principles of Accounting I (ACCT& 201)
  • 5 credits Principles of Accounting II (ACCT& 202)
  • 5 credits Principles of Accounting III (ACCT& 203)
  • 5 credits Business Law (BUS& 201)
  • Business Law requirment advising notes:
    • Universities with a lower division Business Law requirment: University of Washington (all campuses), Washington State University (all campueses), Eastern Washington University, Central Washington University, Wester Washington University, Gonzaga University, Saint Martin’s University, Seattly Pacific University, and Whitworth University
    • The following institutions do not require a lower division Business Law course and agree to accept the course taken as part of this degree as a lower division elective, but generally not as an equivalent to the course required at the upper division: Heritage University, Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle University, and Walla Walla University.
    • International students who completed a business law course specific to their home country must take a business law course at a U.S. institution in order to demonstrate proficiency in U.S. business law.
Electives: No more than 5 credits of General Electives
  • Must be a college-level course as defined by the community or technical college.
  • Gonzaga, Pacific Lutheran, Washington State, and Western Washington University requirements: These institutions have requirements for admission to the major that go beyond those specified above. Students can meet these requirements by careful selection of electives that are equivalent to the following:
    • Gonzaga: Management Information Systems (BSIM 235)
    • Pacific Lutheran: Computerized Information Systems (CSCE 120), or either an equivalent course or skills test
    • Washington State (all campuses): Management Information Systems (MIS 250)
    • Western: Introduction to Business Computer Systems (MIS 220)
  • Advising note: Students should contact their potential transfer institution(s) for advice on which general elective course to take.
