MATH 090 Introduction to Algebra for STEM

5 credits
This course covers basic algebraic concepts and operations that will prepare STEM students for MATH 099 . Topics include solution of first and second degree equations, linear graphs, inequalities, systems of equations, exponents, polynomials, and factoring.

Prerequisites: MATH 087  or equivalent placement score.

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Identify the basic properties of real numbers
  • Apply properties of the real number system to both numeric and algebraic problems
  • Solve first and second degree equations in symbolic and in word problems
  • Solve and graph inequalities
  • Solve formulas for a specified variable
  • Graph linear equations
  • Solve systems of equations in two variables
  • Apply the rules of exponents
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials
  • Use factoring to solve equations
  • Use the mathematical critical thinking skills of problem solving, pattern recognition, substitution, following structural rules, and quantitative modeling to solve problems involving basic algebra
