MACH 122 Machining Practice: Tools - Tap Handle, Clamp, and Punch

8 credits
While making a tap handle, parallel clamp and center punch, students learn more advanced tooling processes common to the machine trades.

Prerequisites: MATH 087  and ABED 046  (or equivalent placement scores for MATH 098  or higher and ENGL 093  or higher) and MACH 110  (pre or corequisite) or instructor permission
Quarters Offered: Winter, Summer

Student Outcomes/Competencies:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Mill flats on a round surface
  • Use slotting attachment to broach a square corner
  • Knurl small diameter parts
  • Identify and machine tool steels
  • Turn an angle that extends over 6 diameters
  • Harden and temper tool steels
  • Use geometric die head
  • Turn radii
  • Machine angles on mills
  • Turning grooves
  • Effectively work in groups by supporting and communicating with other team members
