EASL 028 Accent Correction I

This independent-study class is intended for intermediate ESL learners. Students will practice different vowel sounds through various types of pronunciation exercises at both word and connected speech levels.

Prerequisites: EASL 030  or equivalent placement score.
Quarters Offered: Fall, Winter, Spring

Student Outcomes/Competencies:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Identify vowel sound contrast pairs through listening to recorded exercises, repeating listening practices, and using illustrations that explain how to make each specific vowel sound
  • Master the most common patterns of English stress and intonation using a highly visual approach for making sounds learnable
  • Improve listening comprehension skills and the ability to perceive the sound more accurately through practicing a variety of pronunciation exercises, dialogues, and conversations, using a set of four audiotapes
  • Improve spelling through using basic spelling patterns and providing lists of words taught for the sound being practiced, thus linking spelling and pronunciation and providing an opportunity for further practice and review of pronunciation material
  • Develop a better understanding of spoken English
