MACH 107 Conversational Programming, Production, and Inspection

10 credits
Students will learn the basics of conversational programing on ProtoTRAK mills and lathes. Students will practice feature-based machining, tool selection, calculate speed and feeds, dry run and run simple programs to produce milled and turned parts. Students will gain experience making parts in a CNC machine shop environment. Students will run milled and turned parts, check for precise dimensional accuracy, troubleshoot error codes monitor coolant levels, adjust cutter compensation and set tool length offsets. 

Prerequisites: ABED 46  (or placement into ENGL 93  or higher) and MATH 87  (or placement into MATH 98  or higher) 

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Maintain a safe working environment
  • Demonstrate safe operation of manual/ProtoTRAK vertical mills and horizontal lathes
  • Discuss the CAD, CAM, CNC process
  • Demonstrate understanding of CNC axes destination movement
  • Identify position of program reference zero
  • Calculate appropriate speeds and feeds
  • Utilize CNC work-holding devices
  • Demonstrate proper use and selection of tools
  • Develop job planning skills and ability to plan for production
  • Demonstrate ability to set machine offsets and adjust cutter compensation
  • Identify various types of features and identify an appropriate conversational toolpath
  • Inspect a first article and complete proper documentation
  • Inspect parts for dimensional accuracy
  • Complete operator tie-in sheets
  • Setup and maintain an organized workspace
  • Troubleshoot machine error codes
  • Observe, identify and demonstrate proper lockout/tagout procedures
  • Identify and interpret material safety data sheets
