OTA 100 Introduction to Occupational Therapy

4 credits
This course provides a basic introduction to the field of Occupational Therapy and the skills required for success in the OTA program. Topics include the history, philosophy, and core values of the profession, as well as an exploration of the common practice settings. Students will learn the role of the OTA, professional behaviors required in the profession, as well as develop an introductory understanding of the medical terminology and client factors that provide a foundation for treatment intervention.  

Prerequisites: ENGL 099  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of and be able to communicate the history and philosophy of the Occupational Therapy (OT) profession
  • Describe how personal values align with the core values of OT
  • Describe the role of the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) and the relationship between the OTA and the Occupational Therapist (OT)
  • Describe common and emerging settings in Occupational Therapy
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the professional behaviors required in the profession 
  • Spell, define, and utilize given medical terms as the foundation for clinical practice
  • Identify given skeletal and muscle structures of the upper extremity
  • Recognize, name, and replicate joint motions of the upper extremity and apply these motions to use in everyday activities
  • Develop a study plan for success as an OTA student 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of skills for managing stress and coping as a student
