FSE 450 Interpretation of Death in Literature and the Arts

5 credits
This class explores the basic elements of literature and art through storytelling, reading, and writing about selections that have death as a central subject. The readings consist of works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama. Film and art selections will also be included.

Prerequisites: FSE 330  and FSE 405  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Investigate death as a central theme in literature and the arts
  • Critically examine death in different genres of literature and the arts
  • Recognize the main elements of different literary genres and assess their significance
  • Identify main themes in literature and make reasonable assertions about their meanings
  • Interpret images and symbols in the arts to infer their relationship to the main themes of the work
  • Apply literary elements to reading and writing
  • Write about death in literature and the arts using appropriate conventions and citations
