DHYG 335 Community Dental Health I

2 credits
Students study the health-disease continuum from the viewpoint of the community, the basic concepts of community dental health, and the dental hygiene process of care model, as it relates to health communities. 

Prerequisites: DHYG 258 DHYG 321 , DHYG 322 , DHYG 323 , DHYG 324 , DHYG 325 , and DHYG 329  

Corequisites: DHYG 331 , DHYG 332 , DHYG 333 , DHYG 336 , and DHYG 338  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Explain a health promotion community project, focusing on assessment, diagnosis and planning
  • Describe basic concepts of community dental health
  • Explain the role of dental hygienists in oral health education and promotion 
  • Describe the Process of Care model for healthy communities 
  • Describe current public health prevention modalities
  • Describe global dental hygiene care delivery
  • Explain financing of dental care
  • Explain the role of the dental hygienist as an agent for change

Program Outcomes
This course teaches to the following program outcomes:

  • be prepared to successfully complete all licensing exams required to practice in Washington State and obtain an entry-level position as a dental hygienist
  • assess, plan, implement, and evaluate community-based health promotion and prevention programs to benefit the general population
